April DIY and gifties!

Several years ago I bought this chaise-lounge at IKEA.
The only ones using it are the cats, who sleep on it every night.
I was never completely happy with it being white
and lately the busy floral pattern has started to annoy me.
But new covers aren't cheap, even by IKEA standards.

I had seen a few blog posts on painting upholstered furniture,
so I decided to give it a go. Not to waste too much paint,
I removed the covers and painted them twice before I put them
back on. Though, to completely cover the pattern it ended up
needing four coatings anyway.

The chaise-lounge also has alot of surfaces and crevices,
so I used about 5 litres of matte water-based acrylic paint
(regular wall paint), 2 bottles of cheap hair conditioner
as a textile medium, and diluted the paint with 1/3 water.
But a smaller project will not need much paint at all,
and the cost of the entire project was (except several hours
of labor) only about 300 sek/40 usd - 1/4 of what new covers cost.

The end result feels a bit like really coarse Gore-tex,
and is not especially nice to sit on, but all the cat hair,
dirt and grime just brushes right off. I really like it
and I can imagine it being the perfect solution for dog owners.

For some reason, the color turned out much lighter and more blue
in the pictures. It's actually a pretty somber, dark greyish purple.
So are the candles and napkins in the picture below... weird camera.

Easter went by in a blur, with lots of family dinners
and socializing, and of course I forgot to take pictures
of all the food and cakes I made. So here's a picture
of the flowers my man brought me yesterday instead :)

These are the latest purple additions to our home;
large drinking glasses and the lovely Violet,
a wonderful gift from Emma at Little Gothic Horrors.
She has already made friends with another little
project I'm working on :) Thank you, Emma!

I noticed that I've gained some new followers over these last few weeks
away from the blog world. I'm not sure what I've done to deserve it,
but thank you very much - and I'll be visiting you all real soon!

  1. Squeals! I love the painted chaise. I've wanted to paint a couch for ages, and I'm ticked to see it done. Those glasses are gorgeous. I'm envious. Happy spring lovely lady. those flowers are swoon worthy. What a sweet man.

    1. Thank you, Sarah, on all accounts!
As long as you're up for the work, I'd say; go for it! I think it would be great for a household with dogs, like yours.

  2. Nice "cat bed!" Funny how they claim certain things as their own.

    1. Our cats actually move around the 4 possible upstairs "cat beds" on a regular basis. Our boy cat always wants to be on top of our girl cat, and she just wont have it. SO every week he moves into her latest spot and she has to find a new one, and so it goes :)

  3. I must admit, that I probably couldn't stand purple in my own home, but that 'cat bed' looks really cool. :)

    1. I am always looking to incorporate more purple into our homes, but lately black is coming back for me, in a big way.

  5. It's very pretty; it looks like leather. The kitties are spoiled. :) Love the glasses.

    1. I have never liked leather, since I grew up with an elephant couch in the living room (yes, that was before anyone knew anything). But I guess I can live with faux :)

  6. I love all that purple, your chair turned out really nice! I can sympathize with the annoyance of reupholstering furniture; I have these wing back chairs my mum gave me and they're a beautiful shape but a hideous colour! They're dusty rose, it's one of my most hated colours, I'm not even sure why I accepted them lol. I purchased some floral upholstery fabric, it's girly but very pretty, I figure I'll give it a shot and hope I can redo one of my chairs. I thought about painting them but the fabric has been mangled by cats so it wouldn't work. >.< I've seen some fancy painted chairs on pinterest and oh how I envy them.

    1. Your chairs sound beautiful, but I agree - not a fan of dusty rose either...
I hope you can up-cycle them somewhat easily. I immediately thought; Black velvet chairs! But I'm sure your floral print will be great :)

  7. It's more pleasing to your eyes and easier to clean after the furry babes. I say is a winner (Ms Chemist and Crafter!).

Love the dolly from Little Gothic Horrors. And love having you back. ♥

    1. Hmm, it doesn't seem as if I'm really back just yet. There are big things going on in my life at the moment, so I will probably continue only posting sporadically for a while.

  8. Aww... Violet looks so at home in all your glorious purple splendour! Your chaise is amazing! I have never heard of this painted upholstery technique. Years ago, I covered some hand-me-down couches, and they turned out pretty well, but what a job... I spent days swearing over a sewing machine. ;D

    1. Yes, I'm not sure I'll ever paint such a big piece again. And re-covering old furniture is a huge task, cudos to you!
Violet was such a treat, thank you again!

  9. I really like the new chaise colour! I've seen those tutorials too, and often wondered what the fabric would feel like after it was painted. I'm not a huge fan of gore-tex so I guess I'll have to learn how to reupholster a chaise now. LOL

I also love the flowers, new purple glasses and especially Violet! I love the little cards that accompany them. :)

    1. The camera I'm using now is actually totally off, and not transmitting the right color of anything. I don't know what's up with it, but believe me when I say that chaise is dark purple!

  13. What a great Idea, I would have never come up with fabric paint as a solution! I would have sewn a cover, but the paint looks amazing :)

  14. I never thought of painting upholstered furniture. That's just way too cool!
I am glad to see you blogging again. I know you've had some difficulty with computers lately and that is never easy. Hopefully things in that respect are getting better?

    1. ACtually, still; no... I have still not fixed my computer, and I'm still borrowing a friend's laptop now and again. Lately I seem to be developing my interests in the real world instead, and missing the internet less. But I'm sure that will change as soon as I get my laptop back!

  15. Wow, you've done a great job on the chaise!

"It's not especially nice to sit on" < Perhaps a throw would make it cosier.

Gorgeous new glasses, and I adore the beautiful flowers.

Ah, Violet is adorable, Emma's such a sweetheart!

    Have a wonderful weekend ♥

    1. I loved the kitty Emma made you too!

I don't need the chaise to be nice to sit on, I just need it for the cats (and to throw clothes on) :)

  16. The purple chaise looks amazing! Awesome job! I am sad to announce that I have no recipes that are gluten free from the tea party I went to, all of the treats were purchased from a local gluten free bakery!

    1. It seems to be popular right now, as our local bakery has started doing gluten-free bakes every Thursday. I must admit, I would rather just buy a bun or two for my little niece, than have to bake whole batches :)

  17. Oh wow, I didn't realise you could paint furniture like that. It looks really good. I have two cats (one long-haired) so I know what a nuisance cat hair can be!

    1. The best part is that the chaise-lounge still looks great, like it would be lovely to sit on. Though I wouldn't recommend this treatment to any actually utilised and comfortable piece of furniture, it is very rough now.

    1. Me too, it's been ages since I bought other than candles at IKEA. But now I have my eye on the new Stocksund couch, dark gray with black legs. It's an affordable variant of the Howard/Oxford type sofa.
